What Is IV Therapy? A Physician's Plain-Language Guide
IV therapy is the direct delivery of fluids, electrolytes, vitamins, or medications into a vein. Because the infusion bypasses the digestive tract, the contents reach circulation in minutes rather than hours, and at much higher concentrations than oral intake can achieve. That is the entire mechanical advantage. It is not magic, and it does not work for every situation in which someone feels run down.
What is in a typical IV bag
Most general wellness or recovery infusions start with a saline base (sodium chloride in sterile water) and add some combination of electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, calcium), B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and depending on the indication, anti-nausea medication, anti-inflammatories, or amino acids. The exact composition is a clinical decision, not a menu choice, which is why physician oversight matters.
Who is not a candidate
IV therapy is not appropriate for patients with certain heart conditions, kidney disease, severe electrolyte imbalances, or pregnancy without obstetric clearance. People on certain blood pressure or diuretic medications need their formula adjusted. A proper screening conversation, which we conduct before every appointment, sorts this out in a few minutes.
What to expect at a session
A mobile session typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. We screen and review your history, place a small IV catheter, and start the drip. You can sit on your couch, work, read, or rest. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild (cool sensation at the site, brief flushing). We monitor throughout and remove the IV at the end. There is no recovery time.
