Why Mobile IV Therapy Beats Walk-In IV Bars (When It's Done Right)
Most IV bars are nurse-only operations working from a fixed menu under a medical director who is rarely on site. That model is legal in most states, and competent nurses run safe sessions every day. But the structural difference between a physician-supervised practice and a nurse-only IV bar matters in two situations: when something on your intake form changes the right answer, and when something during the infusion does.
What proper screening looks like
A good intake covers more than allergies and current medications. It asks about kidney function, heart conditions, recent labs, current symptoms, recent fever or infection, pregnancy, and what you actually ate or drank in the last 12 hours. Some of those answers should change the formulation. A few of them should cancel the appointment and redirect you to your primary care physician. A nurse-only protocol cannot make that call without a phone consult, which often is not built into the workflow.
Why your home or hotel is a better setting
The clinical setting matters less than people think, but the comfort setting matters more. Patients who can lie on their own couch or bed, in their own clothes, with their own bathroom, have a calmer infusion experience and fewer vasovagal episodes. For people on vacation or staying in a hotel, eliminating the round-trip to a strip-mall storefront is its own argument.
Questions to ask before you book any provider
- Who is the supervising physician, and are they on call during my appointment?
- What is your screening process, and is there an opt-out for any reason?
- What is in the standard formulation, and can it be adjusted?
- What happens if I have a reaction?
If the answers are vague, keep looking.
